Matt Domsch schreibt in seinem Blog, dass in der kommenden Fedora-Version 15 die Namen der Netzwerkschnittstellen nun endlich konsistent und vorhersagbar werden. Bisher ist die Benennung der Netzwerkschnittstellen unter Linux abhängig von der Initialisierungsreihenfolge der einzelnen Schnittstellen. Damit soll nun, dank des Einsatzes des von Dell entwickelten Tools biosdevname in Zusammenarbeit mit udev, Schluss sein. Das Bezeichnungsschema verwendet statt ethX nun em1 für die Onboard-Netzwerkschnittstelle (embeded) und das Schema pci<slot>#<port> für Netzwerkkarten. Das ist ein guter Schritt in die richtige Richtung. Aber ich sehe da Kompatibilitätsprobleme bei bestehenden Programmen, welche eventuell das alte Schema fest eincodiert haben. Da kommt wahrscheinlich eine Menge Arbeit auf die Maintainer von Distributionspaketen zu. Aber es muss sein. Für eine besser vernetzte Zukunft.

This is a HUGE step backwards. Although it probably works OK for the Dell motherboards for which it was designed, it does not work properly with any of the non-Dell machines I administrate. This feature introduces a kludge for the entire non-Dell world.
Example: Asus motherboard has two on-board ethernet ports. Your software properly defines one of them as being on-board, and improperly defines the other as being on an expansion slot when it is not. This hardly improves the job of administrating the PC. The net result is that an unnecessary complication has been introduced into the linux nomenclature, which serves no useful gain. It changes the naming paradigm with claims of producing ‘helpful’ information, yet it produces inaccurate disinformation as it’s output. This change has effectively wasted thousands of administrative man hours. Congratulations.
Please be advised that the proposed method of disabling of this feature, using ‘biosdevname 0′ on the kernel command line fails to work.
